Rovio is all set to prove that it is not just a one-hit-wonder with the Angry Birds spin-off Bad Piggies, which is scheduled to launch for iOS, Android and Mac on September 27, with the Windows Phone, Windows 8 and PC version of the game to follow sometime later.
Fans of Angry Birds may have spent hours punishing the green pigs for stealing eggs from the birds, refusing to learn a lesson despite facing the wrath of the feathery creatures.
After a while, it is only natural to wonder why the pigs are refusing to give up and what exactly is going through their minds. Why on earth are they putting their lives on the line in order to get their hands on those eggs?
It seems that Rovio heard what the fans of the franchise are so desperately to find out and therefore decided to develop a game that would put players in the shoes of the pigs. After taking a great deal of beating at the hands of the birds, it is time for the green swine to shine.
The game was officially announced by the developer on Tuesday. Rovio CEO Mikael Hed conceded in a statement that the large amount of empathy towards the pigs from the Angry Birds franchise served as the main inspiration for the game.
“There’s a lot of empathy towards the lovable enemies from the Angry Birds games, and we’ve been constantly asked: what about the pigs’ side of the story? Bad Piggies gives you the chance to play as the second-most-loved characters in the Angry Birds universe, and explore this rich world through their green eyes.” said Hed.
Commenting on Bad Piggies, EVP Games at Rovio Petri Järvilehto admitted that the team really enjoyed working on the other side of the story that the fans of Angry Birds have so often wondered about.
“We’ve had a lot of fun creating a totally new and unique gameplay experience. There’s so much more to these pigs than what is seen in the Angry Birds games, and Bad Piggies is the first glimpse into what’s going on in the imaginative and ingenious minds of the pigs,” he said.
Rovio has revealed that the gameplay of the upcoming Angry Birds spin-off would be quite different from the original series, stating clearly that there would be no sling-shot. Of course this raises even more questions regarding what the players would be expected to do and how the pigs’ side of the story would be delivered.
It would be interesting to see whether Bad Piggies manages to make the same impact that the Angry Birds games made. With the original series setting the bar really high, Bad Piggies will definitely have to offer something really special in order to make it possible for Rovio to maintain the reputation that is has earned through its Angry Birds games.
