Walmart claims to have narrowed down a Spring 2013 release date for the upcoming game and has begun taking pre-orders as Sony respond to the announcement.

Many are of the opinion that Sony and Microsoft are switching their focus to their respective next generation consoles, however, the likes of The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls seem to be suggesting otherwise.

Sony has always maintained that it has a 10 year life cycle for its PlayStation brand products with games still being released on the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable console. In the case of the latter it still remains in the top five best-selling in Japan when it comes to the weekly charts.

However, Sony will be hoping that the new IP, which is currently in development at the expanding studio that brought the Uncharted series to the world, Naughty Dog, will have the same impact in the industry and market.

The Uncharted trilogy and IP is one of the PlayStation brand’s biggest assets with the game known for moving considerable consoles from shop shelves to homes and making Sony a fair bit of profit on both the software and hardware front.

Instead of releasing another game in the series, Naughty Dog opted to break its studio into two teams with one of the teams working on the post-apocalyptic, The Last of Us. The game follows the story of Joel and Ellie as they look to survive in a world where other humans are just as dangerous as the infected.

There has been plenty of speculation surrounding the release date with the early rumours pointing towards a holiday season release date. However, that did not happen as Sony seemed to want to release more family friendly titles during this time.

The latest run of rumours now have the game pegged for an early 2013 to the spring of the same year release. Walmart added fresh fuel to those rumours’ fire when it began taking offering reservation cards for the game claiming it was set to release around that period.

However, Sony was quick to calm down the situation and make their position on the matter very clear when they responded with the following statement:

“We haven’t announced any release date. Walmart is speculating.”

Many expect the game to be released around the same time as the likes of Dead Space 3, Crysis 3 and the other big names set to hit stores between February and April. It may not be as exciting as the Holiday Season but there are plenty of big names on offer during that time including Grand Theft Auto V if rumours are to be believed.
