Sony delighted with Holiday Season sales as both consoles see massive spike in sales following Black Friday and the week preceding it with Jack Tretton, the President of SCEA, taking the opportunity to comment express his pleasure.
Sony reports impressive sales figures following Black Friday as their main console, the PlayStation 3 sells over half-a-million units in six days, while the Vita sees an upward trajectory on the sales front as well.
Many believed that Sony had been left behind in the current generation console race when it released its console at the very end of a competitive period. Nintendo was running away on the sales front with the Wii, which proved to be massively popular and Microsoft had established itself in the one-year it took Sony to finally release their console.
Early sales for the PlayStation 3 were not promising as it suffered from negative reviews and its lack of games also meant that more consumers were tempted towards the other two consoles. However, a price drop and a new marketing campaign, complimented by Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, LittleBigPlanet and a host of other titles put the console back on the map. Since then it has gone on to match the Xbox 360’s sales on a yearly basis.
While Microsoft’s console remains ahead of the PlayStation 3 on sales, the latter is managing to increase its year-on-year sales and end on a strong finish. Sony recently released a new, slimmer model of the PlayStation. Called the Super Slim, the console is set to go against the Nintendo Wii U, as it falls in the same price range as the first next-gen console.
If the Black Friday sales are any indication, the plan seems to have worked as the Wii U only sold 400,000 units as compared to the PS3’s 525,000 units sold.
Jack Tretton, the President of Sony Computer Entertainment America, or rather the person everyone knows as the main presenter during Sony’s E3 Conferences, expressed his delight at the figures.
He said, “We’re very pleased with the Black Friday sales results, especially the incredible reception for the PS3 and PS Vita bundles.” Before going on to add, “The demand was very strong which quickly depleted our inventory across retailers nationwide.”
Tretton also took the opportunity to comment on the growth of the brand and what he deems to be the console’s formula for success. “The PlayStation brand generated significant revenue and year-over-year growth at retail because of our focus on what gamers love most in combining amazing hardware with great games and digital entertainment.”
