Capcom has confirmed that 12 new characters will become available for its 2D fighting game Street Fighter x Tekken following the release of downloadable content (DLC) for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on July 31, 2012.

The extended roster for the game will include six characters from the Street Fighter franchise and six characters from the Tekken franchise, bringing the total number of playable characters to 50.

One of the most prominent addition to the game from the Street Fighter is Blanka, an enraged green mutant with an ability to envelope himself in electricity and perform a huge array of acrobatic moves such as a lightning-fast roll through the air. It was indeed surprising for the fans to see one of the core characters of the franchise missing from Street Fighter x Tekken at the time of its release. However, Capcom is finally bringing him back, much to the delight of the fans.

Other Street Fighter characters making their way into the cross-over between two of the best fighting games to have ever been made include Cody, Dudley, Elena, Guy and Sakura.

The fans of Tekken franchise also have plenty of reason to rejoice after Capcom’s announcement of the DLC for the consoles and PC. While there are a handful of characters from Namco’s fighting game that will be playable in Street Fighter x Tekken at the end of this month, one of the most notable addition is that of Bryan Fury, a cyborg with an ability to deal massive damage, Bryan is expected to give a significant boost to the overall experience offered by Capcom’s 2D fighting game.

Other Tekken characters to be introduced through the upcoming DLC include Alisa Bosconovitch, Christie Monteiro, Jack-X, Lars Alexandersson and Lei Wulong.

Interestingly, the 12 characters mentioned in Capcom’s recent announcement are already present on the game disc, though they are locked by the developer and need a code to be unlocked. Players will be required to pay $19.99 to unlock the new characters on PlayStation 3 and PC, while the Xbox 360 owners will have to pay 1600 Microsoft Points to get their hands on the new DLC.

Originally, Capcom had announced the 12 new characters for Sony’s portable video game console PlayStation (PS) Vita. However, the company decided to release the DLC earlier on video game consoles and PC. Even though the Vita gamers have fallen behind other gaming consoles in getting the new characters, they will be getting additional privileges and content. Instead of just one code to unlock characters, they will be getting two codes. The first code will do exactly what is expected off it, i.e. unlock characters. However, the second code will allow Vita gamers to get their hands on free alternate costumes for the 38 characters that were originally present in the game at the time of its release.

The release date of DLC for PS Vita his not been confirmed yet, though it is expected to become available next month.
