Square Enix’s upcoming game Sleeping Dogs will be featuring the voices of well-known Hollywood and Hong Kong cinema stars, including Emma Stone and Lucy Liu.
The company revealed the names of the celebrities who are involved in the project, stating that “a line-up of both Hollywood and Hong Kong cinema stars were enlisted to help the game capture the tone of Hong Kong cinema.”
There are very few people who did not fall in love with Stone after watching her portray the role of Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker’s/Spider-Man’s high-school sweet-heart in The Amazing Spider-Man that hit the theatres last month. She had also starred in comedy film Easy A as well as Superbad. Gaming fans of the actress can rejoice as Square Enix has gotten her onboard to provide her voice for a supporting character in Sleeping Dogs.
Liu is best known for her role in Charlie’s Angels, an action film in which she starred alongside Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore as a kick-ass detective. She also portrayed the role of an assassin in Kill Bill. She too will provide her voice for a support character.
According to Stephen van der Mescht, the executive producer of United Front Games, Sleeping Dogs will contain more than two hours of dialogue, adding that the script has been inspired by some of the top Hong Kong films. In the bid to make the script come to life, the most appropriate actors and actresses were selected for voicing the characters.
“As huge fans of the genre we knew exactly who we wanted; we knew who could bring the script to life. The end result is fantastic,” he commented.
Other than Stone and Liu, the upcoming game will be featuring the voice acting of a number of stars.
Will Yun Lee is a well-known actor on both sides of the world, with majority of the people being familiar with him because of his role in the 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day, which saw him pursuing a not-so-noble cause. However, Lee will no longer be portraying a negative character, but will in fact be lending his voice to Wei Shen, an undercover cop and main protagonist in Sleeping Dogs.
While everyone is currently focused on the third and final instalment of the Batman series, Batman: The Dark Knight Rises, we will be taking a small stroll down the memory lane to revisit Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins. Remember Tom Wilkinson, the guy who played the role of a mafia man? He may not be part of the latest film, but he is still very much active, lending his voice to Pendrew, a police inspector in Sleeping Dogs.
Additionally, Edison Chen from The Dark Knight, The Grudge and Internal Affairs will be providing the voice for the main character’s childhood friend Jackie Mah and the Better Luck Tomorrow and The New Guy actor Winston Chu will be lending his voice to Parry Shen.
Other actors lending their voice to the game include Robin Shou from Hard to Kill and Fatal Chase, Terence Yin from Colour of Truth, James Hong who starred in Blade Runner and The Day the Earth Stood Still, Tzi-Ma from the Rush Hour, Kelly Hu from Martial Law and Yunjin Kim from Lost and Diary of June.
Sleeping Dogs is an open-world crime-drama game developed by United Front Games and published by Square Enix. The game is slated for a mid-August 2012 release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows.
