PlayStation Vita version of Gran Turismo in the works?

Series creator also hints at increased MOD-ing options for Gran Turismo 5 as well and announces that the popular series making its way on to the Sony’s second generation portable gaming console and the experience would “like to make use of the” console’s 3G features.

One of Sony’s biggest series, known for selling consoles, is the Gran Turismo series and one console which could do with a bit of help on the sales front is the consumer electronic giant’s second generation portable gaming device, the PlayStation Vita.

The Vita struggled to knock the Nintendo 3DS off the top spot in its debut week and since then has seen sales figures plummet. However, the Vita has made a bit of a comeback in Japan following the release of a number of new titles.

The same scenario repeated itself when the console was released in other territories. The lack of new content on the console lead to a drop in sales, which have not recovered. Improvements were seen when Mortal Kombat and Resistance: Burning Skies were released for the Vita but there just have not been enough new titles to create any kind of momentum.

Sony did emphasize on the Vita during their Press Conference at E3 announcing a number of titles for the console scheduled for release this holiday season. Among that list were titles such as PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Liberation and Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified.

Those titles will surely stir up some interest in the Vita, while LittleBigPlanet is sure to boost sales until then. The game is set for release in September and is one of Sony’s most beloved titles.

However, the lack of racing games on the console is something that Sony need to address and Kazunori Yamauchi, the creator of the Gran Turismo series, has hinted towards the series making its way on to the Vita.

In a recent interview at the China Joy game event, Yamauchi, teased gamers when he had this to say after being asked about a PlayStation Vita version of the Gran Turismo series:

“If we were to make it, we’d like to make use of the ability to play anywhere and the ability to use 3G at any time.”

At the same time Yamauchi also commented on the possibility of adding more modification options for cars in Gran Turismo 5. He said, “If we can find a good balance, we’d like to increase the areas where users can make modifications.”

One can expect those modification options, if they are approved and developed, to be made available as a software update for the game.

Whatever the case, the Gran Turismo series needs to be more regular in its releases or it may lose ground to other racing titles in the lone run.
