It turns out the fans of Capcom’s zombie shooter Resident Evil franchise will have to wait a while longer to get their hands on the PC version of the sixth game in the series.
The senior vice president at Capcom Christian Svensson revealed through the Capcom Unity blog that the work on the PC version of Resident Evil 6 started only after the console iterations of the game were completed and approved by both Microsoft and Sony.
The development of the PC edition was held back because the company was willing to make the same mistake that it had made with the PC edition of Resident Evil 4, a game that had not gone down too well with the fans as it was well short of the experience provided by the console version of the game.
Svensson conceded that this time a different approach had been adopted. Waiting until the console version of Resident Evil 6 was completed, the developers were able to use that final codebase as the starting point for the PC edition of the game in a bid to get it 100 percent right this time around and not repeat the mistakes of the past.
The Capcom executive further went on to reveal that the team working on the PC version of the upcoming zombie shooter is different from the one that had been originally planned. While few in numbers, the team of developers is being regarded as extremely competent and capable of delivering even better results than the team that was being originally considered.
“It is a small, but appropriately sized team working on the RE6 PC project,” said Svensson. “It is a different group than originally planned, lest it would have taken even longer than it currently will but this team will do a better job than what was being considered originally.”
The vice president at Capcom pointed out that some of the fans of the franchise are under the impression that the company does not put in enough effort in the development of the PC version of its games, consequently resulting in a rather dismal experience. He acknowledged the disappointment and complaints of the fans, stating that while they may have failed to deliver with the Resident Evil 4, they have learnt from their past mistakes and thus putting in an immense amount of effort to make Resident Evil 6 as close to perfect as possible.
“Projects like this you guys seem to think are ‘trivial’ but they are not,” he said. “When they get treated as trivial, you end up with Resident Evil 4 PC… which I don’t think too many true fans were pleased with.”
As far as the release date of the PC version of Resident Evil 6 is concerned, Svensson conceded that it would be some time before details regarding the release and PC specific parameters will be provided.
Resident Evil 6 is scheduled to hit the shelves on October 2 for both PlayStation 3 as well as Xbox 360.
