PART 2: So let’s jump into the details then and explain why the three-pronged approach from Capcom could be the best thing since sliced bread with cheese that has been toasted just enough to get the cheese melting, while at the same time could be a gamble that could end in disaster as well.
Starting things off with Leon S. Kennedy, the protagonist of perhaps one of the finest gaming experiences in history, Resident Evil 4. Fans of that game and those that preceded it will be pleased to know that Leon’s playthrough stays true to the classic survival-horror feel that the series was built on.
There are not machine guns, rocket and grenade launchers. Instead there are pistols and your partner can carry a shotgun. Ammo is scare, the hallways are dark and claustrophobic and its more about surviving than anything else.
Movement is restricted while aiming to such an extent that it would be better to just stand still and shoot, which for the pure Resident Evil fans is good news. There are some compromises as Leon can now dive and roll around but those seem necessary additions when one considers the number of zombies that the player has to fight through.
There is no doubt that the main objective for the development when developing Leon’s gameplay and storyline was to satisfy the nostalgic whims of the core survival-horror loving Resident Evil fans.
At the same time, Chris Redfield’s storyline is something entirely different. The game has a more action oriented focus, but there is still an element of horror despite carrying bigger weapons. Chris’s story and gameplay will appeal to fans of military shooters that focus on the element of brotherhood.
Chris can be seen caring about his men and fighting to keep them alive above all else. Although there is more action then Leon has had in all his previous games, Chris’s bit still retains an element of horror, albeit just enough to provide a link between Leon and Jake Muller.
Jake represents the new ethos of Capcom. With more weapons then many people can carry, the new character can cycle between Assault Rifles, pistols, revolvers, Sniper Rifles and his own fists as he rains hell down upon anyone who comes in his way.
This is not the Resident Evil that many will be used to but one they can expect more of in the future.
In essence, the demo tell us that Capcom is looking to cater to the needs of every gamer with Resident Evil 6, be it someone who wants the trademark experience as well as those who want an action heavy game.
Will the move pay off or will it be a case of the too many flavours on the same dish? It seems only time will tell.
