The game’s developer, 343 Industries, assured fans that Kinect compatibility will not be added for the heck of it but it will be used for the Halo Waypoint app that is set to release alongside the game.
Microsoft has seen its taken on the world of motion controlled gaming, the Kinect, go on to become a global phenomenon and become a part of pop-culture. The peripheral has sold like pre-cooked turkeys on Thanksgiving and Microsoft even launched a whole campaign hoping to keep momentum going.
However, one game that will not be jumping on the ‘better with Kinect’ bandwagon as the Halo franchise development director, Frank O’Connor, who is not a present day descendant of the Assassin’s Creed Connor in case you were wondering, pointed out.
He began, “Halo is a core game series.” Before elaborating on what that meant for the series and the franchise itself. He said, “More than most other games, it is directly linked to the muscle memory of holding an Xbox controller, going back as far as the days of the Duke on the first Xbox.”
Connor explained how the Kinect could be used for Halo titles, but more as an aid to the User Interface instead of a substitute for conventional controls. Connor explained, “Kinect is a logical extension of the UI, and with regards to some of the ci-fi themes we’re actually pretty excited about it, but not for the controls.”
The franchise development director continued, “That’s not what it’s for, and we would never try to shoehorn that into out game.”
However, there is a use for the Kinect when it comes to Halo Waypoint. “But there’s a lot of cool experiences that we’re going to put on Waypoint in the future that’s completely appropriate for the experience.”
Halo 4’s return is the subject of much discussion and excitement amongst the Xbox gaming population as they gear up for the return of one of the gaming world’s most iconic characters. Master Chief left everyone when he entered the cryogenic chamber to return when he was needed.
It turns out that Microsoft needed him sooner than expected and hired 343 Industries to take over development duties after Bungie, the original developers of the game, decided they would move on to other projects.
Halo 4 is set to go head to head with Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 as both are set to release alongside each other this holiday season and the map of first-person shooters could see a tectonic shift.
But getting back to the matter of no Kinect support for Halo 4; do the readers think it’s a smart move or a wasted opportunity? Let us know in the comments section below.
