The remake, starring Colin Farrell and Jessica Biel, of the classic sci-fi film is set for a release on BluRay and Sony is hoping that adding a God of War: Ascension demo in the mix will increase sales of the extended director’s cut.
Total Recall originally broke new grounds in the sci-fi world when it was released all those years ago and as is the case with Hollywood, where originality takes second priority to copying other medium’s success, the movie got a remake.
To be fair it was not a remake as much as a reimagining of the story, with the core concept staying pretty much the same, but then again it brought very little to the original apart from better special effects.
There were many who enjoyed the movie but many more who walked out feeling they could have done something more productive with their time.
However, that being said, the movie is set for release on BluRay and Sony is looking to pair its Hollywood arm with its video gaming one and providing one mega package, well kind of.
Anthony Caiazzo, the Product Marketing Manager for Sony Computer Entertainment America, took to the official US PlayStation blog to break the story and reveal the offer.
It seems that even he knew that the best way to sell the movie was to promote the God of War: Ascension demo first and the movie second. He wrote:
“Hello God of War fans!” it’s funny because he said God of War not Total Recall, “Sony Santa Monica is very excited to be teaming up with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to get you some exclusive hands-on time with God of War: Ascension on December 18th.”
“For a limited time, when you purchase the Director’s Cut Total Recall Blu-ray and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack you will receive the E3 2012 God of War: Ascension Single Player demo.”
Caiazzo went on to explain what the Director’s Cut had to offer, which included 20 minutes of new footage as well as over one-and-a-half hours of special features, before also adding that it had a demo to God of War: Ascension again.
The Product Marketing Manager concluded in the same line as his first statement:
“The demo includes the new gameplay mechanics and combat systems we showed off earlier this summer, so you can get a taste (of) all of the brutal action before the game launches next March.”
An interesting strategy by Sony and if it works out one can expect a number of such promotions in the future.
Sony’s plan is to become the leader in digital content and cloud services, and is focusing on integrating all of its services into the newly formed Sony Entertainment Network. This seems to be another brick in the wall of that building.
