Ever sat in the movie theatre or at home watching an action flick and wondering how awesome a game the movie would make? Well, The Raid: Redemption literally screamed for a video game adaptation and here is why it can work.
First things first, for those of you who do not know about The Raid: Redemption and call yourselves action movie fans then please proceed to slap yourselves on the face as punishment. The movie was released in 2011, is rated 7.7 on IMDB and with a tagline which reads, “When there’s nowhere left to run or hide…you fight or die”.
If anyone has seen the reboot of the Judge Dredd movie, Dredd 3D and liked it, well many consider it to be based or rather inspired by The Raid.
So let’s take a look at how the Thai film’s premise, setting and story make it ideal for translation on to the interactive entertainment platform.
Platform: The game is perfect for pretty much every console out there, barring the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS, for obvious as well as technical reasons.
Art style: Think Rocksteady’s gritty, grimy and thoroughly atmospheric Batman: Arkham games. The same grim filled, decaying walls and corridors will be the perfect way to bring out the look and feel of the movie and make it fit in the video game world as well.
Players: A single player game by default, co-op features can be worked into the game although there is little to no room for multiplayer.
Production values: it does not need a star-studded cast or extremely high production values in terms of cut scenes as the action itself was the movie’s selling point and will be more than enough to sell the game as well.
Soundtrack: Mike Shinoda.
Storyline: the same as the film as there is little talk, plenty of action and enough plot in there to keep players wanting to find out how everything will end.
Gameplay: this bit is crucial as once again the Batman: Arkham games come to mind. However, the perfect fit would be the combat of Sleeping Dogs, barring the gun play of course. While Batman was smooth and fluid, the action in Redemption is more about desperate, visceral and raw emotions and moves.
Contextual kills using the environment would also need to be put in place and weapons made extremely scarce. Oh and there need to be boss fights with each floor having its own boss or bosses.
Lastly, a few quick time events should be put in place for the bits where hand-to-hand combat is not viable.
That may just be a rough outline but just imagine the possibilities. Can we trademark this somehow before EA snaps it up?
