The film adaptations of video games have not proven to be a great idea in the past, but it seems Ubisoft is looking to change the perception with the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell movie.

As per a report by Variety, Inception and The Dark Knight Rises actor Tom Hardy has been chosen to play the role of the film’s main protagonist Sam Fisher.

Hardy is among the most prominent rising stars in Hollywood, showing an immense amount of versatility and great acting skills in the handful of films that he has acted in.

Signing on for the role of Fisher for the upcoming Splinter Cell film, the expectations by movie lovers and fans of the franchise will rise to an entirely new level.

If played correctly, the role of Fisher can help the English actor put the likes of Jason Bourne and James Bond to shame, which may seem like an overstatement, but those familiar with the super agent will not find it hard to digest.

The chief executive officer at Ubisoft Motion Pictures Jean-Julien Baronnet expressed joy over having Hardy on-board.

“Tom Hardy is one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills. His involvement in the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell movie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike,” she stated.

Eric Warren Singer, who is well known for his work on The International, has been entrusted with the responsibility of writing a great script for the film.

Baronnet was all praises for the writer, calling him one of the most talented writers in the industry today.

“Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers today. We’re confident he’ll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story for the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell movie, while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans,” said the Ubisoft Motion Pictures executive.

Bringing an entertaining experience to the big screen will undoubtedly be a huge challenge for Ubisoft.

The trend of film adaptations of video games is something that has been there for years, but so far it has struggled to bring the desired reaction from the audiences, both film lovers as well as the fans of that particular franchise.

The only respectable movie based on a video game that comes to mind without putting too much thought into it is Mortal Kombat that was released over a decade ago.

Since then, the audience have come across many films, which include Tekken and Prince of Persia, which have made them extremely cautious about pinning expectations to a film adaptation of a popular video game franchise.
