Australian plays Black Ops 2 for more than five days

Sets record but still doesn’t make to number one on the leaderboards. Accepts being inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records as consolation.

The release of a new game brings a number of opportunities for people as the playing ground is level and everyone starts off on the same footing. Everyone has the same chance of making it to the number one spot of the online leaderboards or being the first to unlock all the achievements or earn all the trophies.

However, for one Australian gamer, the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 meant the perfect excuse to skip work for the pursuit of playing the game non-stop for as long as he could, with the perfect excuse to boot: a world record attempt.

Okan Kaya spent 135 consecutive hours playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 in an attempt to break the world record for the longest ever gaming session by a single player. His attempt was successful, well done.

The rules of the attempt allowed a ten-minute break every hour. The breaks can be accumulated and used in bulk if the attemptee wishes to do so.

However, despite his best efforts and the world record, Kaya failed to reach the number one spot in the online player leaderboards, which makes us wonder if he was any good at it. In the end, Kaya went as high as 37^th,which makes us wonder if there are 36 other Black Ops 2 players out there who are more deserving of the record.

We kid, well done to Mr. Okan Kaya for achieving the record and writing his name in history until it turns out that some 43-year-old has been playing Everquest or World of Warcraft in his basement for the past five years.

That bad joke apart, Black Ops 2 looks set to break a few records of its own despite not breaking the launch week sales record, it did do better than the current record holder on two fronts. Firstly, Black Ops 2 recorded the highest ever first day sales of any entertainment product in history and secondly, it recorded the best sales figures for any game in the second week of sales.

Whether or not the game can go on to break the record for fastest entertainment product to reach the billion dollars in revenue mark remains to be seen but the reception from fans and gamers who thought the Call of Duty games had been stale has been positive as Treyarch have pushed the boundaries of the series and taken it in a new direction.
