The concepts thought up by Kojima Productions were scrapped from the final Platinum Games version as they did not fit in the new direction the game was taking following the switch in developers.
Just to add a bit of background and avoid any confusion from the start, Metal Gear Solid: Revengeance was originally intended to be the first game to be developed using Hideo Kojima’s Fox Engine. Kojima, is the creator of the Metal Gear series and the founder of Kojima productions, the studio responsible for the series’ development over the years.
However, the action-oriented title, Revengeance, did not fit the studio’s style and development responsibilities for the spin-off were handed over to Platinum Games of Vanquish and Bayonetta fame. Kojima Productions is responsible for the storyline, plot and cut-scenes, while Platinum works on perfectly the sword, hack and slash gameplay.
Yuji Korekado from Kojima Productions is the Producer of the game and he shared some interesting insight into how far along they had gone into making the game before handing the project over. As it turns out Kojima Productions had the concepts for the game’s bosses nailed down and according to Korekado, they would have been the best in the series.
He said, “Just to brag a little but about designs, we believe that the bosses we created for Metal Gear Solid: Rising were probably some of the best in the series.”
However, he went on to explain how Keiji Saito, the director of the game, came in and scrapped the bosses because they did not fit in with the action approach the studio wanted to paint on the game. He continued, “But Saito came in and said, ‘We’re not going to use these bosses.’ So you’ll not be seeing them this time around. As an action game, we believe that the bosses should resemble the dynamics of the design, and although they’re very unique, we believe that these characters very much fit into the Metal Gear world. And we hope you guys feel the same when you see them.”
Could that be a hint that they will be making an appearance in Metal Gear Solid 5 or maybe even Metal Gear Solid Zeroes? Who knows, but the teasing seems to be working and one has to wonder whether or not the studio will share the concepts anytime soon.
In the meantime, gamers have Revengeance to look forward to, with the spin-off from the core Solid series attracting a fair amount of attention. Whether or not the game can live up to the massive hype surrounding it remains to be seen but so far things seem to be fairly positive.
