The first two games in this series, Dead Space and Crysis, were both three-quels but it is time to change the pace a bit with a prequel or rather an origin game.
Chances are that if a gamer ever owned a PlayStation One, PlayStation 2 or a PC around the time of those consoles, then they have either played or heard about Tomb Raider. The series spawned a number of titles and spin-offs as well. Not only that but Hollywood got in on the act and decided to cash in on the popularity of the series when they released two Tomb Raider movies. The films starred none other than Angelia Jolie and were met with reasonable success.
While Dead Space 3 and Crysis 3 are more inclined towards science fiction, Tomb Raider is looking to make the survival-action-adventure genre its own. The game is releasing on the 5th of March, which essentially means it is following hot on the heels of EA’s two titles.
The reboot or rather origin story will allow players to find out what made the innocent student a globetrotting adventurer. Currently in the final stages of development at Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix has plenty riding on the game to ensure it also has something on offer in what has become a rather competitive Q1 for 2013.
Rhianna Pratchett is the person responsible for writing the story of the game and comes with vast experience in the field. One can expect a visceral, gritty experience this time around with Lara being forced to take her first life as she looks to survive and ensure that those with her do too.
Tomb Raider courted plenty of controversy following its reveal trailer during E3. The alleged ‘rape scene’, which saw Lara apparently being manhandled by one of the game’s goons before she rounded him and took his life, the first life she ever took, was met with an outcry from certain members of the public.
The developers of the game were swift in their response, claiming that there was no attempted rape and that they wanted to show the world what finally pushed Lara and forced her to kill someone for the first time.
Many have likened the game to the Uncharted series with its various set-pieces and quick time events and that is not a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination.
Does Lara’s origin as the Tomb Raider interest you or is it another prequel that you are looking more forward to? A certain prequel regarding a certain God of War perhaps?
