New face of Lara Croft

Crystal Dynamics global brand director Karl Stewart has hinted of a possible sequel to the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot.

Talking to Videogamer, the director of San Francisco-based developer conceded that the latest game in the franchise was going to present Lara Croft in an entirely new light. While the strong new persona has a lot to offer, the latest story being introduced is also not something that can be completely narrated in just one game. He revealed that the next game will just be the beginning of her journey and he knows exactly where she is headed, explicitly stating that it will not be just one game.

Stewart stated that “At the end of this game we want her to be that strong female character that is willing to go and seek out mysteries and seek out tombs. She’s going to be going to plenty of tombs in this game, but we’re going to have somebody who wants to go on that adventure, who wants to be the person that she now is. That’s the goal.”

If this is exactly what Crystal Dynamics has planned for the series, then the fans can very well buckle their seat-belts and prepare themselves for an exciting ride.

The Tomb Raider franchise is an action-adventure game with apparent role-playing game (RPG) elements in it. The game encompasses the adventures of Lara Croft as she travels around the world to explore different cultures, unravel various secrets and get her hands on priceless artefacts. Coming out on the PC in the 90s, the game contributed heavily to the 3D revolution of video games. The game was both a commercial and critical success, while the Lara Croft character became a part of every male gamer’s fantasy.

After portraying Lara Croft as a fearless and confident woman who was adept at surviving the toughest challenges thrown at her by life and nature since the very introduction of the franchise, the developers of the game are now sending players into her past, allowing them to witness her transformation from a young, inexperienced and vulnerable girl who recently graduated from academy into what everyone knows her to be today.

Core Design was behind the development of early Tomb Raider titles before Crystal Dynamics took over the franchise. The latter added its’ own flavour to the series and even though the sales of recent titles were not as high as their predecessors, they were arguably more enjoyable.

The upcoming Tomb Raider reboot is stirring quite a strong bit of excitement among the fans. The new direction taken by developer Crystal Dynamics and publisher Square Enix is keeping everyone in suspense as to what they are about to experience.

The latest title in the Tomb Raider franchise is slated to come out for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on March 5, 2013.
