Guerrilla Games upcoming Killzone series debut on the PlayStation Vita could be the title the console needs to bring it into the mainstream but it won’t be easy
The PlayStation Vita may just be suffering from the astronomical levels of hype it created for itself in the build-up to its release last year. The technology was there to truly make portable gaming stand out and carve out its own market and niche, however that has not turned out to be the case.
The Vita is struggling to sell in the numbers that Sony expected with a number of executives highlighting the issue but also stating that they are not too concerned about the sales figures at the moment. Nintendo faced a similar issue with the 3DS when it was first launch and it took considerable restructuring for the portable platform to become the success story it is today.
A massive price cut, pay cuts for executives and a complete reforecasting of the sales were needed before the 3DS began to show an increase in sales. Sony on the other hand does not believe the Vita’s situation requires any such drastic moves and their strategy is focused on releasing titles on a regular basis in order to ensure gamers have something to choose from in order to keep them engaged with the Vita.
If that is the case then 2013 could prove to be a make or break year for the platform. It did release a number of solid titles during this year such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush and Persona 4 Golden, not to mention the likes of Mortal Kombat, LittleBigPlanet and Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation, but it still lacked that killer platform defining app.
There are two titles, set to release in 2013, which have the potential to change that. The first is Media Molecule’s next project, Tearaway. The creators of the LittleBigPlanet series are set to release an all new IP designed specifically for the Vita and if it works half as well as the LBP games then Sony may just have plenty to cheer about.
On the other hand, there is another first-party studio developed title in the works and it could redefine the console’s hopes and light a beacon that could bring a considerable chunk of core gamers onto the Vita. That title is Killzone Mercenary and it has the potential to change the Vita’s fortunes for a number of reasons.
Read on in the second part of this article to find exactly how the game can bring some much needed triple-A quality on to the console.
