Despite the people at Nintendo working hard to convince the general public that the upcoming Wii U is not as bad as the critics make it seem to me, some analyst, publisher or developer ends up stating something that takes its toll on the Japanese company’s efforts.
This time, the damage has been done by Bethesda, the publisher behind blockbusters like Elder Scrolls and Fallout.
In a recent interview with MCV, the marketing executive at the company Pete Hines came out to reveal that the company has no plans of bringing something out for the Wii U console.
The Bethesda executive conceded that the company is still doubtful about the capabilities and potential of the upcoming console and until that is determined, the plan is to stay clear of it.
He further went on to explain that the company has traditionally held strongly to its mantra of making games for only those platforms that support them. Since Microsoft and Sony have valued the work of the studio, the latter has focused on making games for their consoles instead of stepping into a territory that is still to meet their criteria.
“So far the Wii hasn’t fitted into that,” Hines said. “Whether Wii U does down the road is [to be determined].”
Nintendo had failed to come off as appealing to the Bethesda team in the past as well, with the studio only creating one game for the popular console, Star Trek: Conquest. Despite having no plans for the console’s successor that is expected to arrive in the market this holiday season, it is still too early to assume that the next-generation console will never receive anything from the company in the future.
The situation is getting increasingly worrisome for Nintendo as just as they are nearing the launch of their new console, more and more publishers seem to be unconvinced about what the hardware would offer and whether it would be worth the utilisation of resources to come up with a product for the console.
Wii U has already been ignored by Capcom, which is all set to release the sixth title in the Resident Evil franchise, while Electronic Arts also not voiced any plans of bringing Dead Space 3 to Nintendo’s high-end console.
Reportedly, Activision was not too excited about next-generation console either, primarily because of the GamePad, an interactive tablet controller. The publisher is said to have even threatened to keep its Call of Duty franchise off the upcoming console unless an alternative controller was introduced, which Nintendo agreed to and therefore revealed the Wii U Pro Controller at this year Electronic Expo Entertainment (E3).
There are still plenty of blockbuster franchises in the pipeline for Wii U, but it remains to be seen whether they will be able to help Nintendo beat the odds.
