British actress Camilla Luddington has been revealed by Square Enix as the new voice of Lara Croft for the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot scheduled, finally bringing the suspense to an end.
The search for the new Lara Croft voice had been going on for quite a while now, with Square Enix conducting an extensive international talent hunt across Europe and the US for someone who is capable of delivering “both a depth of emotion and the youthful tone needed for Lara Croft.”
The publisher found their search come to an end after they came across Luddington. With the latest Tomb Raider game portraying a much-younger Lara Croft in the midst of experiencing her first-ever adventure after graduating from the academy, the choice to go for the likes of Luddington does not come off as surprising.
The press release by the company also mentioned the word “performance actress,” suggesting that the British actress would be doing more than just lending her voice to Lara Croft. She will most likely provide facial as well as motion-capturing for the game as well.
Luddington will begin the publicity campaign along with rest of the Tomb Raider development team by attending the 42nd annual San Diego Comic-Con and Nerd HQ scheduled to be held this summer to discuss the overall game and her role.
Before becoming the new voice of Lara Croft, Luddington had been earning quite a reputation for herself in the television industry. She performed the role of the latest member of the British Royal Family, Kate Middleton, in the Lifetime movie William and Kate. She also appeared as Lizzie in HBO TV series Californication, something that her fans below the age of 18 would definitely be oblivious to. Luddington will also be in the latest season of HBO vampire-oriented TV drama True Blood.
The Tomb Raider franchise has seen four different actresses portray Lara Croft in the past, with Keeley Hawes being the last of the lot and serving as the voice of the popular protagonist from 2006-2010.
Luddington will undoubtedly have a lot of expectations to live up to as she becomes the voice of a younger version of Lara Croft. The immense popularity of the fictional character is not hidden from anyone and the knowledge that most of these fans have been in love with the character for over two decades would not exactly serve to make the job any less demanding for her.
After a quick google search and YouTube session, we have noticed that Luddington is indeed a beautiful actress with promising acting skills. She would definitely bring something new to the character that she has been asked to provide her voice and performance skills to. The fans can relax as Square Enix appears to have done their homework well before selecting her as the new Lara Croft.
Tomb Raider is slated to come out on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on March 5, 2013.
