Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 reveal does not impress CryTek as the developer claims that while the former is just showing off demo’s, CryTek has games that have already been released and are doing the same things.
For those who do not know why two developers, CryTek and Epic, are making such a fuss about their various iterations of game engines, it is because in terms of harnessing a platform’s power and channelling it efficiently both claim to be the best.
CryTek is known for the visually stunning Crysis series, which never fails to raise the bar in terms of graphics. On the other hand Epic is known for the Unreal Engine, which has powered more games than countries on this planet, including the Gears of War series.
The Unreal Engine is licensed out to other developers as well, making it one of the most widely used engines in the industry, however, an increasing number of developer studios are beginning to create and use their own in-house engines. Some prime examples are Ubisoft using the Anvil engine for Assassin’s Creed and DICE using the FrostBite Engine for Battlefield 3.
So in the war of words as to which engine is the most advanced, CryTek has taken the first swing, claiming that everything Epic is demonstrating now with the Unreal Engine 4, has been done by CryTek three years ago.
Cevat Yerli, the president of CryTek, boasted “The only thing I can say is that CryEngine 3 already exists at the quality of Unreal Engine 4.”
He continued by rubbing a bit of salt in the freshly opened wound, “It (CryEngine 3) already exists for three years now. You can go back three years ago to the GDC (Game Developers Conference) videos. What we put out there is pretty much what Unreal Engine 4 put out now.”
Yerli went on to point out that the next iteration of the CryEngine would be out in the near future. He said, “Pretty soon you’re going to see the next iteration of CryEngine, and I’m not putting a number behind it.”
The president of the studio also boasted that the current engine was ready for the next generation of consoles as well and had been for quite some time. He said, “CryEngine 3 is next-gen ready since three years ago. We stand by that. If I look at what people call next-gen technology now, it’s what we were seeing three years ago. “
The final taunt came in the shape of Yerli stating that while Epic were talking about their latest engine and what it could, CryTek was already doing it with games that were already in the market.
“We didn’t just talk it up as tech demos, we have games that are shipped and are doing it.”
