Somewhere in between welcoming competition from Konami’s latest entry in the Pro Evolution series, EA Sports, the developers behind the FIFA series, cheekily took most of the credit for the rival’s improved game.
The relationship between EA Sports and Konami has never been one of hostility, aggression or back talk. It was always more of a friendly derby with a few cheeky comments passed but nothing that would insult the other in anyway. That is, nothing like the EA and Activision relationship where they openly slated each others’ first-person shooters.
Think of EA Sports and Konami’s relationship as the rivalry between Liverpool and Everton, in the sense that the talking is done on the pitch, with matters of the pitch being one of mutual respect and the odd cheeky comment from time to time.
David Rutter, the man behind rejuvenating the FIFA series, once taunted his rivals that he would love to ‘help’ the developers get their game back on track. This was after Konami’s standards had slipped and FIFA had become the dominant football simulation title.
In the latest jape towards their rivals Peter Moore, EA’s COO, explained that they “always welcome competition” as it kept them on their toes.
The comments come after critics praised the latest Pro Evolution offering and claimed that the series had find its long lost mojo. Moore however, believes that credit for that lies with EA Sports.
Reminding the world that “Pro Evo has been a favourite game for a number of years” he went on to explain the main reason behind their comeback with the latest iteration, “but I think FIFA has been a powerful force and we’ve raised the quality of what soccer games are in the entertainment business.”
FIFA 13 has been hailed as the best game in the long running series yet and the same has been said of Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 by a number of review sites, which makes one wonder which of the two games will end the year on a higher high.
Traditionally PES has been the preferred game of choice and four to five years ago it would be a shoe-in for the majority of fans, but FIFA’s impressive comeback and record breaking sales figures in recent years means that this time around its set to be an open game.
But what about the readers; will you be buying FIFA 13 or PES 2013? Or maybe even invest in both? Let us know what’s going through your mind as you make this monumental decision in the comments section below.
