Kazunori Yamauchi, the creator of the Gran Turismo series and the head of Polyphony Digital, is determined not to hint towards the release date of their upcoming title prematurely in order to avoid all “it’s been delayed again” talk which plagued the release of Gran Turismo 5.
When it comes to first-party titles and series, Gran Turismo is in a league of its own when it comes to racing simulators. While Need for Speed, Grid and Forza Motorsport cater to gamers looking for an enjoyable arcade racing experience, the Gran Turismo series was always known for its realistic driving mechanics.
Gran Turismo broke new ground on the PlayStation One and the ensuing entries in the series made their debuts on every Sony console since, including the PlayStation Portable. However, there was plenty of frustration surrounding the release of Gran Turismo 5.
The game was to be the first entry in the series to be released on the current generation of consoles and the development period was seen by many as too long. The studio teased the game on many an occasion and even released a glorified demo, Gran Turismo: Prologue, to keep fans busy but constant delays meant that the final product did not satisfy many apart from the hardcore fans.
The game has since undergone a host of enhancements and updates before everyone can agree that Gran Turismo 5 finally looks like the finished product.
It seems that Yamauchi does not want the same dragged out ‘is it delayed?’ debate which plagued the release and development cycle of the previous instalment.
Speaking at the Asia Championship event of Gran Turismo 5, Yamauchi went on record stating, “If I carelessly say when it will be released, you’ll end up with people saying things like ‘it’s been delayed again’ so I will no longer say at this type of event.”
Yamauchi confirmed that work on Gran Turismo 6 was already in full swing and pointed out that the game would be developed on the latest technology, which is a hint towards it being released for the PlayStation 4.
In the meantime, Yamauchi also stirred up some interest in the rumour surrounding a PlayStation Vita version of the racing simulation series being in the works. A survey hinted towards the possibility of Gran Turismo Vita and since then the rumours have done nothing but gather stream.
Sony has been bringing a number of its triple-A first-party series on to the second generation handheld console and GT seems likely to be one of those games heading the portable way.
