GameStop has listed GTA 5 for a release on the 1st of March 2013, the internet goes crazy, but Rockstar refuse to comment on the latest batch of rumours surrounding their game.

This bit of news would have made tsunami level waves had it been released a few months earlier. However, by now, there have been so many rumours and speculation surrounding the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 that even the most die-hard of fans will be sceptical.

And so they should be, GameStop has a history of announcing release dates prematurely and more often than not, inaccurately. This time seems no different either as Rockstar and every other official party has refused to comment on the latest round of speculation.

GameStop’s UK division listed the game for the 1st of March, 2013, which happens to be a Friday. This would put the game in direct competition with the likes of BioShock Infinite, Dead Space 3 and Crysis 3 as well as God of War: Ascension.

There is no doubting the fact that if the game was released during that time it would outsell them all without stopping for gas on the way, but that is not the way Rockstar operate, as they would have hyped up the game a lot more than they already have if that was the case.

On the flip side, the listing is not the first indication hinting towards the release date for the game being set in March, however, without any official comment from Rockstar the news remains a rumour.

One of the major reasons players can expect the game to be released by the end of March and not necessarily the first of the month, is the fact that Take-Two’s, Rockstar’s parent company, financial year ends on March 31st.

The real question is whether the publisher would want Grand Theft Auto 5’s sure to be phenomenal sales to count this year and carry on into the next or be the primary source of income in the coming fiscal year.

Rockstar has kept a steady stream of content flowing out to the general gaming public, especially in the form of screenshots of the many vehicles and locations players can expect to be in the final game, but apart from that it has remained as tight-lipped on the matter as Sony and Microsoft have on their respective next-gen consoles.

When Rockstar decide to officially announce the eagerly anticipated game’s release is the question on every gamer’s mind and it will be interesting to see how accurate the rumours were. Until then all one can do is sit, hope and start saving up for what has to be the most anticipated game of 2013 by far.
