The Xbox 360 Police are on the case as Microsoft threatens anyone who plays the leaked version of Halo 4 with a ban. However, there is still a bit of confusion as to whether a pre-release review disc or the retail version of the game has been leaked.

Microsoft seems to have a bit of an issue on their hands as their eagerly anticipated upcoming game isn’t upcoming any more. As it turns out a version of the game has already hit the ‘streets’ so to speak.

Reports emerged of Halo 4 content being downloaded and played by gamers. The news was reported by a number of sources. The news blew up when Microsoft confirmed it and announced that they were looking into the matter and had alerted the concerned authorities.

A spokesperson from Microsoft released a public statement:

“We have seen the reports of Halo 4 content being propped on the Web and are working closely with our security teams and law enforcement to address the situation.”

As it turns out Microsoft is issuing bans for what it is being categorised as, “illegitimate prerelease title play.”

So if you do happen to have stumbled across a copy of the game then it would be best not to indulge in the experience just as yet.

At the same time, Microsoft is not sure as to which version of the game has been leaked. Although the ultimate version of the game is the same, the source could make all the difference. Whether or not a retail copy of the game or a pre-release demo version for review sites was the one which prematurely released is still unknown.

Microsoft is hoping that Halo 4 will fly the flag high for Xbox 360 exclusives this holiday season as it gears up for the eagerly anticipated first-person shooter.

The latest iteration of the game has not been developed by Bungie, which developed the first three games in the series as well as the prequel, Halo: Reach. Halo 4 was developed by 343 Industries which has added its own creative twists and input into the game.

For one, the classic Halo protagonist race, the Flood, will not be featuring in the single-player component of the game. Instead, Master Chief will be fighting against the Prometheans who bring with them all new kinds of weapons and technology.

There is a lot riding on the game as an entire new trilogy has been announced and Halo 4 needs to convince fans that the series in the hands of the right developers or risk a fallout from those gamers who have grown to love the series.

Also in case the reader didn’t know this by now, Halo 4 comes in two discs.
