Sackboy is set to turn your world inside out with the Sackboy app, currently only available for EU residents, but it could make its way across the pond eventually.
All major publishers in the video game industry are diversifying their portfolio by releasing content on multiple platforms. Electronic Arts, Rockstar, Activision and Ubisoft are just a few publishers that are expanding their distribution horizons and catering to the fast-growing mobile games market.
Sony though seems to be taking its time, although it does seem to have big plans for it mobile gaming future. Already having launched the PlayStation Suite, as well as listing a number of PlayStation Certified phones, Sony recently released an updated PlayStation app, which allows users to do a multitude of neat things on their smartphones.
Smartphone owners who have the PlayStation app on their phone can download the “LittleBigPlanet Sack app”, which will do a number of LBP related things.
Firstly, users need only walk into any store and point their phones camera at the cover of LittleBigPlanet Vita. Doing so will bring Sackboy to life and instantly activates a mini-game. Not bad for a free game, albeit a mini one, and also a great way to get consumers into stores. If the strategy works then Sony may very well have gotten multiple birds with one pebble.
Also, users can place Sackboy in any environment on their phone with the same app. Sony elaborated, “All you need to do is use the LittleBigPlanet Sack App to place a virtual Sackboy in your environment and take photos of him.” Users will then be required to, “Share your image with @LittleBigPlanet via Twitter and you could be a LittleBigPlanet Sack App winner. Be sure to include the hashtag #whereissackboy with your photo.”
‘What is the prize?’ one might ask, well Sony touched on that too as uploading the images allows players the chance to potentially have “the chance to win some downloadable goodies.”
The app does sound like it will challenge the likes of Angry Birds or other more established IPs in the mobile gaming market, but it does offer PlayStation and more importantly LittleBigPlanet fans something to do on their phones.
One can sense all the major publishers creeping into mobile gaming territory and one can sense it is only a matter of time before major console releases are tied in with Android or iOS apps to coincide with them. Dishonored is one game that has done that with the Rat Assassin app for iOS and Android.
But what about the readers; does the LittleBigPlanet Sackboy app tickle their fancy or is this one LBP bit that they will let pass by? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
