Microsoft's Xbox E3 Press Briefing

BioWare’s Casey Hudson, the game’s executive producer, explained that the development team’s passion, fan feedback and adding value to the franchise was the reason they changed the endings.

Mass Effect fans were left raging after they ended the latest game in the series, where none of the three endings that players could unlock, based on their decisions and actions during the game, satisfied them.

That usually is not a problem as a minority of fans often complain about such things, yet this time around an overwhelming majority of fans took to forums and blogs to rant about just how lacking and unfulfilling they found the overall experience.

The reaction was so widespread that BioWare actually sat up and took notice and despite earlier stating that they would not be changing the endings, went back on their decision and began looking at fan feedback to see how the situation could be improved.

Commenting on what led to the development team actually working on creating new endings for the game, Casey Hudson, the executive producer of the game, explained that the passion of the development team coupled with the fact that the received “constructive feedback, constructive criticism,” really excited them.

He conceded that he did not expect all the fans of the series to take to the new endings either. He said, “You can never completely satisfy everyone. We’ve seen a whole range of feedback.”

The feedback, according to the executive producer ranged from those who wanted the game’s story to be redone from scratch to those who simply wanted to clear a few things up regarding the ending as well as those who like the endings as they were.

As for the new endings to the game, Hudson believes that it will bring up a whole new range of discussion points among gamers. He said, “So there’s no doubt that there will be a whole new wave of discussion and debate, maybe even controversy.” Before going on to say that BioWare “didn’t do the Extended Cut because we’re trying to make everybody happy, make it perfect – we just saw an opportunity to expand on things that we felt could add value to the experience, for those that appreciate it.”

The new endings have been released as a DLC for gamers to download and experience and it will be interesting to see how fans take to the new end of the trilogy.

Hudson earlier stated that the entire Mass Effect 3 ending saga taught both him and the development team a lot about the fans of the series and what they want from their games. The game’s executive producer is sure to take that information into consideration with his next title as well.
