Japan Nintendo Earnings Preview

Saturo Iwata, the President of Nintendo, has stated that being the first next generation console in the market is not as important as compared to what price it will be sold for.

Nintendo is set to be the first of the three platform developers to have their next generation console out in the market. In fact, the Nintendo Wii U has been shown off at two E3 Press Conferences and not a single detail apart either the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox 720 has been released officially.

That is, apart from the news that both consoles are currently under-development but nothing more has been released from an official standpoint from either Sony or Microsoft.

Many analysts believe that the fact the Wii U will be the first console to hit the markets will give it a huge edge over both Microsoft and Sony who will release their consoles either in late 2013 or early 2014.

However, the CEO of Nintendo, Saturo Iwata, believes that the next generation console race will not be settled according to which console makes it out of the blocks first but on another, more important, factor.

Iwata began, “Being first in the next generation race is not important at all.” According to him the Wii U will shape how the console war will pan out. He said, “One of the reasons we believe this is the time for Nintendo to launch the Wii U is it’s going to be important for the world.”

As for what the Nintendo President believed would be the most important factor in determining which console would come out on top it turns out that pricing will be crucial. He said, “The pricing of Wii U is going to be one of the most important elements when it is going to be launched.”

Iwata believes that times have changed from when the Wii was launched and how it took the world by storm, especially since the introduction of smartphones, tablets and social networking into the mainstream.

He explained, “The environment is different. Wii U is going to be launching in a different environment than when the Wii was launched. Also, the involvement surrounding [mobile and social] businesses is different than several years ago.”

The Nintendo President also believes that the early scepticism surrounding the console would change once gamers got their hands on the hardware and tried it out for themselves. According to him the console still confused consumers and that would be the Wii U’s greatest obstacle.

Whether or not the Wii U will be as successful as its predecessor remains to be seen but the first order of business would be getting a solid release date from Nintendo along with a pricing point.
