The recent discovery of data relating to Mega Man and Pac-Man on the Xbox 360 version of Capcom’s Street Fighter X Tekken disc came as a huge and pleasant surprise for the owners of the Microsoft current-generation console.
However, the joy did not last for long as the producer of the two-dimensional (2D) fighting game Tomoyaki Ayano made it clear during an interview with Siliconera that the two characters were not meant for the Xbox 360 version of Street Fighter X Tekken. Instead, they were to remain exclusive to the PlayStation 3 version of the game.
Even though Ayano specifically mentioned PlayStation 3, the two characters will also be available in the PlayStation Vita version once it is released.
He went on to admit that the two characters discovered on the Xbox 360 disc by hackers were indeed there, but the company has no plan of unlocking them through a future downloadable content (DLC).
Explaining the presence of the two characters on the disc, he said that it is not unusual to keep data on a disc without having any intention of ever using it.
“Unfortunately for Xbox 360 users, Mega Man and Pac-Man are exclusive to the PS3 version of the game… Every game has data on it that is unused. In this case, Street Fighter X Tekken for the Xbox 360 did have the Mega Man and Pac-Man data on it. But, we never intended to release these characters on the 360. They are PS3 exclusives and that was our intention from the very beginning. They are not going to be timed exclusives either, they’re PS3 exclusives,” he stated.
Capcom has been facing a lot of criticism lately for putting DLC characters on the disc, but keeping them restricted until the release of codes that would make these characters playable.
The company apologised to the fans for choosing such a method to deliver DLC, but at the same time contended that this method provided flexibility and efficiency to the gameplay throughout Street Fighter X Tekken’s lifecycle. It further asserted that the only difference between unlocking DLC already present on the disc on a later date, or introducing the additional content through the release of a full download was that of delivery mechanism and nothing else.
After making an effort to try and make the fans understand the logic behind having them make complete payment for a game and not getting access to all its features despite their presence on the disc, Capcom clearly has its work cut out for it to give yet another explanation, this time about having Mega Man and Pac-Man data on the disc, but keeping it limited to PlayStation 3 users and making it appear as if the company is looking to make the Sony console superior over Xbox 360.
New DLC will become available for Street Fighter X Tekken later this month, which means that players will be able to purchase codes that would be allow them to use additional characters that are currently inaccessible. Furthermore, the PlayStation Vita version of the game will be arriving in October.
