The upcoming party title from Sony, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, has its first official DLC announcement with Kat and Emmett Graves set to join the cast as free downloadable characters.

Sony emphasized how the casual and family market in the gaming industry was being neglected by developers and published and based their entire Holiday Season strategy to target that particular segment. So instead of games such as Uncharted or The Last of Us doing the rounds, the publisher has a number of titles with something a little different on offer.

Having already released LittleBigPlanet Karting earlier on in the month, Sony seems to want to emulate Nintendo’s most successful Wii titles. In essence, the lack of Wii games means that anyone can take over the abandoned casual gamers and that is exactly what Sony seem to be planning on doing.

The publisher is also releasing PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, which many would argue shadows Super Smash Mario Bros., however, those who have played the game have noted enough differences for the game to be judged on its own.

All-Stars sees every PlayStation icon from the first console all the way to the PlayStation Vita, available or soon to be available on the roster of the four player Battle Royale. Each character has a rival as well as unique cinematics in their story mode as well.

The roster includes some heavy weights that will appeal to the core gaming segment with God of War’s Kratos, Twisted Metal’s Sweet Tooth and Killzone’s Radec. At the same time Uncharted’s Nathan Drake, BioShock’s Big Daddy and InFamous’s Cole will also feature in the game.

Also in the roster are Heavenly Swords’ Akira, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter and well the list goes on and on.

However, Sony don’t seem to want to stop there and have already announced a timed-free DLC pack, which will be releasing after the launch of the game.

Seth Killian, the Lead Game Designer at Sony Santa Monica Studio, took to the PlayStation Blog to make the following announcement.

“I’m here today to announce the first DLC characters that will be joining the All-Stars roster: Kat from Gravity Rush, and Starhawk’s Emmett Graves.”

Killian continued, “There DLC All-Stars still have a long way to go before they’re ready to be shown off.”

There was more though, “you can look forward to playing them…for free!”

“We’re happy to announce these first two DLC characters will be free to everyone for the first two weeks once they are available to download early next year.”

What’s not to like about free stuff? Each character’s fighting style will also be based on their games with Kat able to “turn gravity on its head” and Emmett able to use Starhawk’s “Build and Battle” system.
