Superbot, the game’s developer, explains how they plan on creating rivalries between characters from different universes such as Jak and Daxter not seeing eye to eye with Ratchet and Clank.
Sony is focused on filling the Nintendo Wii shaped void this holiday season by releasing a number of titles aimed at casual gamers with a family friendly feel to it and bit of a party atmosphere. The publisher publically declared its intentions a couple of months ago and explained how it planned on catering to the neglected family gaming market.
Cue PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Sony’s take on the Super Smash Mario Bros. party game phenomenon. The game was announced during E3 earlier on in the year and apart from looking extremely similar to Nintendo’s game, it did gain the attention of the audience.
The game is a cross-platform title that will utilize both the cross-buy and cross-play feature between the PlayStation Vita and the PlayStation 3. The cross-buy feature will allow anyone who purchases the game on the PS3 to automatically have it available on the PlayStation Vita, as long as they have the same PlayStation Network account.
At the same time, the cross-play feature means that PlayStation Vita users can play against PlayStation 3 owners at the same time.
All-Stars is bringing all the biggest names of the PlayStation brand together and there is a story mode campaign thrown in for good measure. That means that every character in the game will be fighting for his or her respective reasons and players will get to find out exactly what those are.
However, the interesting aspect of it is the touted ‘rivalries’ that the developers is attempting to create with characters belonging to the same developers or genre having rivalries against each other.
Omar Kendall, the game director, went into some detail explaining how this would work, “We take inspiration for our single-player story mode from traditional fighting games. You’ll select your character, you’ll find out what brings that character to the PlayStation All-Stars universe, what they’re doing there, and what their motivation is.”
He went on to explain how the rivalries would work, “What would happen if Ratchet and Clank met up with Jak and Daxter? We actually have a rivalry concept in the game where, during each character’s individual arcade progression they’ll meet a rival, and the will introduce easter egg type elements.”
Omar also went on to cite another example of Dante from Devil May Cry and Nariko from Heavenly Sword both having a rivalry as well. Both characters are currently being handled by Ninja Theory.
It seems an interesting concept, but whether or not it works is another story altogether. If it works then SuperBot may just have a hit on their hands.
