Originally titled, Overstrike, the renamed game is placing emphasis on cooperative gameplay with four players able to play at once, much like Ghost Recon: Future Soldier but with Insomniac’s staple of unique weapons.

Insomniac was once a second-party Sony studio, developing games exclusively for the PlayStation 3. The studio’s first first-person shooter, Resistance: Fall of Man, was a launch title for the console and established the IP as one the console’s main shooters.

However, the developers changed things up with the sequel and despite its impressive scale and gameplay, the studio conceded that they had changed the game more than they should have as it left a number of gamers yearning for the classic Resistance experience.

Resistance 3 was met with plenty of praise from critics but its sales did not match the review scores and the game faded away. It still remains one of the most polished shooters on the console and first-person shooter fans should definitely give it a try.

Since then the studio has ended their agreement with Sony and are now developing a new shooter for multiple platforms. The game was originally titled, ‘Overstrike’ before Insomniac decided that the game’s focus ‘Fuse’ would prove to be more apt.

Brian Allgeier, the creative director of the upcoming game explained that they wanted to name the game after the squad that players would assume the role of but during development they decided to change their mind.

He explained, “But once we were working on Fuse and realised it was the driving force behind the gameplay, it made sense that Fuse was much bigger than the team.”

Allgeier also pointed out how there was an increasing emphasis on sharing gaming experiences and how it excited the team to provide such an experience with the trademark weaponry that Insomniac is known for.

“We play with wives and brothers and friends. The idea of combining this co-operative aspect with crazy hi-tech weaponry was very exciting.”

At the same time, Ted Price, the president of Insomniac, also pointed out how the game planned to carve out a niche for itself in a market flooded with shooters. He said, “I think it has to do with four unique players. Four unique archetypes in a third-person shooter, and those weapons are integrally tied to those characters.”

That was before he added, “That helps create combat scenarios you won’t find in other games and the opportunity to work together you won’t have in other third-person shooters.”

So what do the readers think about Fuse so far; is it a game worth looking into or is it just another shooter that doesn’t offer anything exciting or unique? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
