PS Move Sharpshooter

Zipper Interactive’s SOCOM 4 received mixed reviews when it was released but that a majority of the reviews were based on the controller setup, however, is it any better with the Move or does it still leave a lot to be desired.

Extra thingAMajigs worth mentioning

For those wondering how the game pans out, it is a game with two personalities. The first is the squad based tactical combat, albeit simplified to its core, game while the second is a stealth based tactical espionage game.

Players will alternate between the game’s two main characters during different parts of the same mission. The formula will repeat itself throughout the campaign as players will first need to sneak into the base, complete a few objectives and then sneak out.

Once that is done the second bit of gameplay will see players assault the same based, which was ‘reconned’ the night before. It adds a nice touch to the latter bit of the mission as the map is more familiar to the player thanks to the previous mission being set in the same area.

This adds a nice level of balance for those looking for more than one game-type in the story mode, although, once again we must add how the gameplay is fairly simple and players should not expect too much depth when it comes to the gameplay mechanics.

The Verdict

SOCOM 4 is at its best as an entry level tactical shooter, which works great with the PlayStation Move and Sharpshooter. Go in without any expectations and with the mindset that the game was designed for Sony’s motion controlled peripheral and you won’t be disappointed.

However, for the core SOCOM fans this game is an insult. It has none of the hardcore tactical planning or the level of depth that fans of the series are used to. If you ever played a SOCOM game before this and cherish that memory stay far, far away from this game.

In the end, if one is considering buying this game or even renting it, they need to ask themselves what they are looking for from the game. Do they want a SOCOM experience, a shooter that feels at home on the Move or an entry level shooter for gamers new to the genre?

If your answer is the first one then this game is not for you, if you answered yes to the second and third question then you should find it a pleasant experience, although it will take some time to get used to.

We give SOCOM 4 an overall rating of 6.5/10 on its own, but with the Sharpshooter it gets an 8/10.
