The PlayStation 3 downloadable title is set to make its way onto the portable platform with a host of improvements and new features.

Before anyone begins wondering if the game is an expansion or spin off of the Angry Birds games by Rovio, it would be best to put those comparisons or conclusions to rest by pointing out that it is a completely different game, developed by a completely different studio with completely different gameplay.

The game is more of a side-scrolling shooter with a few elements of platforming and puzzling thrown in for good measure. It also has that quirky sense of humour that has defined the game while it was on the PlayStation 3.

However, in the constant effort of trying to bring more content to the PlayStation Vita, Sony has decided to bring the game to the portable console.

Sian Yue Tan, the producer and head of the studio, took to the Official PlayStation Blog to make the announcement regarding the game’s release on the Vita in early 2013 and also highlighted a number of key new features and improvements that the game would boast.

“When it came down to the PS Vita version, we jumped at the opportunity to iterate on the game once more. We added things like new chapters, puzzles and humor, a unique new Hardboiled difficult setting; improvements to the controls to utilize the PS Vita’s unique features; and improved connectivity for the cooperative campaign.”

Apart from the new chapters, the Hardboiled difficulty setting sees players having “to take down the Penguin regime with just a pea shooter and a very large knife.”

At the same time, the game will also make full use of the console’s touch-screen and touch-panel as well, while the game has been optimized for the Vita’s screen size and resolution, with Shian going as far as claiming that the jagged edges many find in other games will not be present in Rocketbirds.

Not only that but the scrolling element has also been removed with players able counter-tit the screen with the Vita. The game basically saw the screen tilt slightly when the in-game characters moved forward.

The biggest feature however, will be the co-op mode, which will see Sniper Guy and Agent-H, both of whom are exclusive to the Vita version of the game, share the same screen for some co-op action. The mode has been optimized for both local, online and ad-hoc connectivity with other consoles, which is one step ahead of the local-only co-op mode of its PlayStation 3 counterpart.

Anyone looking to prevent Penguin World Domination will surely consider a download but are you one of those? Let us know in the comments section below.
