The screenshot apparently leaking the release date to Grand Theft Auto 5 has been confirmed as being a fake by the studio as many continue to wait for a street date for the next instalment in the record setting series.
Grand Theft Auto 5 is easily the most anticipated game to have been announced in the past six months. Halo 4 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are two other titles that have generated much hype but none can compare to Rockstar’s upcoming title.
Plenty has been teased of the game, including a minute long trailer that gave very little away in terms of story and characters but showed off just how impressive the game was looking and what players can expect.
Since then a number of screenshots have been released including images of speedboats, cheetahs (the classic GTA supercar), helicopters and fighter jets.
For a game of Grand Theft Auto V’s magnitude rumours and reports are not uncommon, however for the series one can expect to hear, see and read about more news than most other games.
In fact, a number of fake, user created screenshots have also made their way online and after denying, at the start, that any of them were real, Rockstar has since adopted a code of silence.
A statement released by the studio in July showed just how fed up Rockstar was with having to clarify the constant barrage of inquiries and rumours that were related to the game.
“There is going to be no shortage of non-stop hoaxes, faked footage and screens, rampant rumours and speculation.” It went on to state the studio’s new policy of dealing with them, “As a rule, we are not going to get into the game of confirming or denying each of these as they happen as there is simply too much of it. Half of them we don’t even understand.”
So there you have it, it turns out that the only time anyone will found out what is real and what is fake is when Rockstar release any information themselves and third-party sources can be considered as inaccurate as the weather channel predicting rain.
However, one should not expect the rumours to stop as the Grand Theft Auto series carries huge importance in gaming circles as well as the industry. Many analysts believe that GTA V is the only game that represents a direct challenge to the Call of Duty series’ domination when it comes to sales and it will be interesting to see if gamers answer the ‘call of duty’ or go on a ‘grand theft auto’ run when the dust has settled and the sales figures can be assessed and compared.
There has still been no news as to whether or not the game will be released this year or the next, though with each passing day it seems that an early 2013 release date seems the most likely.
