Sony to continue support for PlayStation until at least 2015

With all the talk of high-end consoles taking place nowadays, it began to seem as if the days of the current-generation hardware is limited.

However, the owners and potential buyers of a PlayStation 3 console can rest easy as Sony has confirmed that it plans on continuing its support for the system until at least 2015.

In a recent interview with GameSpot, PlayStation VP of hardware marketing John Koller conceded that the speculations regarding the possible death of the aging console in the near-future held no merit and that the company is clear about continuing its support for it for the next few years.

Despite mentioning 2015 as the minimum age of the current-generation console, the Sony executive clearly stated that the support can go on for an even longer time depending on the development scene.

“We’re going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years. Absolutely. And we’re going to continue supporting it not only that long, but as long as there is a development spigot that’s running hot. And I can tell you right now, the development spigot for PS3 is very hot. A lot of great games coming. Same thing with PS2…it’s kind of stuck around as that old warrior, many years after its launch. But there’s still games launching for it,” stated Koller.

He was indeed correct to point out that the PlayStation 3 is as hot at this time as ever. There has indeed been a lot of discussion about the console becoming a bit out-dated and running out of oomph.

However, none of these claims seem to hold any ground because one look at the recent titles that have been released makes it evident that the console is far from running out of its ripeness. One of the biggest reasons for the massive popularity of PlayStation 3 was its powerful graphics and nearly everyone month a new game arrives in the market that pushes the bar even higher.

When God of War III came out, it seemed that the capability of Sony’s current-generation console had been revealed. However, it turned out that the true graphical potential of the system was far from unleashed, something that became apparent after the arrival of games such as Metal Gear Solid 4, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and arguably one of the most stunning games in terms of graphics, Uncharted.

There is a long list of games currently in the pipeline for PlayStation 3, thus making the claims that the console has aged considerably and therefore needs to be replaced with a fresh system baseless. There would definitely come a time when the existing console would not be able to offer anything fresh, but right now, neither the company, nor the publishers or developers are concerned about reaching that point because it still seems a bit far.
