Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has confirmed that the rumours of Final Fantasy Versus XIII being cancelled are not true.
About four days ago, Kotaku had cited anonymous sources saying that the long-delay action role-playing game (RPG) had been cancelled a few weeks back, with the resources and development of the game folded back to be used in another numerical title, most like Final Fantasy XV.
Kotaku further went on to report that it had been informed by the sources that Square Enix was remaining silent about killing the project a few weeks back because of the fear of its effect on the company stock prices and was therefore hoping for the game to gradually fade away.
Before the news could spark any strong reaction from the fans who have been waiting for the game since it was first announced in 2006, Wada brought the rumours to rest by calling the reports about the game’s cancellation false on Twitter today, revealing that the development is very much alive.
“There’s someone making a false rumor that Versus was cancelled. Haha…Just a minute ago, the regular Versus meeting ended,” he said. “If you saw the presentation of the city, it’d knock you off your feet – lol.”
Now that the boss himself has come forward to confirm that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is alive and looking good, there hardly seems to be any reason to continue worrying about the fate of the game.
The recent report about Final Fantasy Versus XIII’s cancellation came off as real convincing pretty much because of Square Enix’s own blunder of remaining mysterious about it for so long. The game was originally announced at the same time as Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0. The other two games have been released long since, whereas there was hardly any update on the development of Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
After a number of delays, the company finally confirmed that the game had entered full-development mode last September. However, Square Enix contributed to the anxiety of the fans by failing to offer any news on the development of the game during last year’s Tokyo Game Show and failed to bring it to the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) that went down in Los Angeles last month.
The only time Final Fantasy Versus XIII got mentioned since entering full-development mode was in May earlier this year when game designer Tetsuya Nomura requested the fans to remain patient for an official announcement for the game.
With rumours of the game being cancelled turning out to be false, the fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Hopefully Square Enix has also learnt a lesson from the episode and will make an effort to keep the fans updated about the development of Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
