Xbox 360 titles dominate the US software sales charts for the period of January to September 2012 with the likes of Madden NFL 13, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Borderlands 2 among the top 20.

A testament to how well-established and dominant Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is in the United States is the fact that nine out of the top 20 best-selling games between January to September of this year were on the platform.

The PlayStation 3 has 4 titles mixed in while Nintendo has a total of seven titles in the charts as well.

Outselling every other title by a country mile was Madden NFL 13, which took both the top spot and second place as well. The Xbox 360 version topped the charts while the PlayStation 3 version followed hot on its heels.

That left third place open for any title that had fans raving, which turned out to be the Xbox 360 version of Borderlands 2. The game with the unique art-style and emphasis on gathering loot, all while adding something fresh to the first-person shooter genre, sold over 5-million units since its release with strong sales both digitally and through the traditional retail channels.

The first of three Wii titles in the top 20 is Just Dance 3. One can expect the next instalment in the series to rank somewhere similar when these charts are released next year, especially with ‘Gangnam Style’ DLC that is set to launch.

Positions fifth through to seventh are held by titles on the Xbox 360 platform. In fifth place was EA’s conclusion to Sam Shepard’s trilogy as Mass Effect 3 sold in the millions.

In sixth place is a title that appears twice in the charts as well with the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3; the game finishes one place above NBA 2K12, which has gone unchallenged and without any major competition on the basketball simulation front.

The PlayStation 3 version of Modern Warfare 3 comes in eight place and managed to hold off Mario Kart 7 which took ninth place. The latter was released on the Nintendo 3DS and has been a massive success in North America.

Rounding up the top ten was Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the game which has won more Game of the Year awards than one can bother counting. The title led to a number of trends including the ‘arrow in the knee’ jokes and memes which took the internet and gaming world by storm.

Other notable titles included Battlefield 3 which finished in at 14th and Ubisoft will be more than satisfied with Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier finishing just one spot outside the top ten at 11th place.
