Rhianna Pratchett reflects on how being from Britain, the same as the game’s protagonist, was a natural fit for her and how it was rewardingly challenging to bear such expectations on her shoulders.

The writers behind a game’s storyline may not be given as much credit as they perhaps should be as not many in the gaming community know the names of those who wrote the ‘script’ for their favourite games. It’s either Naughty Dog’s story or Square Enix’s but there are a number of writers credited with creating the immersive storylines that keep players hooked till the end.

The Nolan North of video game writers is Rhianna Pratchett – we say Nola North because likes Pratchett, North has voice numerous characters in a number of games. Her work includes writing the story for Mirror’s Edge protagonist, Faith, as well as Nariko from Heavenly Sword.

However, for her latest project, which sees her thrust into the spotlight more than on previous occasions, as writing the origins of Lara Croft, one of the biggest icons in the gaming world, is no small matter, Pratchett considers it a “wonderful opportunity to get my hands on the first lady of action gaming.”

She also stated how being from Britain made it easier for her to be more natural about writing up Lara. “Also, being a Brit, it felt like a natural fit for me.” Was what Pratchett told Tedxtransmedia in a recent interview.

“Rebooting such a beloved character has been very rewarding, but also a little nerve-wracking at the same time.” Explained Pratchett, as she hopes fans will take nicely to her work but refused to elaborate on what she had planned next for Lara.

“It’s probably a bit too soon to say what I want to do with the franchise. I can’t really think further ahead than the current project.” Said the writer, skillfully and diplomatically dodging that particular question before continuing, “I just hope we can give players something entertaining and absorbing that may, one day, become as meaningful as the original Tomb Raider.”

There is no denying that the gaming community’s head is turned as they look to see if the more visceral, gritty rendition of Lara Croft lives up to all the hype surrounding the reboot of the classic series.

Fans should expect a bit of a shock as they find out what made Lara the greatest adventurer to grace the video game world. Nathan Drake may give her a run for her money but chances are he’d fall for her in the process.

All in all, there is plenty to be excited about as Square Enix look to bring back one of the most revered series in the world of video games.
